I recently had the chance to check out my very first Cirque du Soleil Show and what an experience it was! Totem traces the fascinating journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly. Inspired by many founding myths, Totem illustrates, through a visual and acrobatic language, the evolutionary progress of species. If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you’ll find many more interesting facts about Totem and other Cirque Du Soleil shows under the hashtag #Totem!
I don’t even know where to start! From the incredible skills of the performers to the elaborate details of the costumes to the amazing craftwork of the set – the show was nothing short of perfection! I sat there holding my breath through many a routine and stared completely mesmerized through another. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite, but I must say that the Unicycles and Bowls routine was truly a nail biter and I was just truly in awe of the talent of those ladies! I kept asking, “How do you even practice a routine like that?” There were also few just really funny and interesting acts, such as a cool highlight of the evolution of man, and some really high impact acts that I would actually describe as pretty sexy. Costumes were amazingly elaborate and detailed and I can’t say that I’ve ever seen a more creatively crafted set design. From start to finish, my one word description of the show…Perfection.
So, fast forward to the end of the show, I also had the opportunity to go on a guided backstage tour and learned that this perfection was no accident. Each and every Cirque performance is taped and viewed live to be sure that there is not a thread out of place. Racks and racks of wardrobe changes are held backstage and a seamstress is available to make any necessary alterations. Albeit, not nearly as glamorous as the front, backstage also featured a good deal of gym equipment for the performers to practice, as well as a host of necessities, such as a laundry room and a cafeteria (with cooks)!
Cirque Du Soleil: Totem is playing now through Dec. 30th at the Grand Chapiteau at Atlantic Station and on to Miami , New York, and Philadelphia starting on January 10th.
